Wine is made in the vineyard and perfected in the cellar.
Excelsior Wine Estate
Meet the Winemaker
When making wine, Johan Stemmet aims to create a product that will make wine drinkers sit back and enjoy every sip, allowing them to forget all of their worldly problems.
To him, a great wine has fullness, flavour, and colour – qualities that he first tasted in perfect harmony when he had a sip of Buitenverwachting Buiten Blanc 1999. Since then, he has worked hard to make easy-drinking wine of the highest quality.
Seeing people enjoy the product that he produced is one of the most rewarding aspects of his job, but his favourite of making wine, is the pressing of red grapes.
About the Winery
The De Wet family has run Excelsior for five generations – that is, since 1859, when Koos de Wet settled here after eloping with his brother’s fiancé.
Over the years, the De Wet family became affluent farmers experimenting with several aspects of the agricultural industry, including breeding horses and ostrich farming. Through it all, wine was always produced in the cellar.
Today, Excelsior exports wine to over 20 countries. With 220 hectares of noble wine cultivars and small plantings of blending cultivars, the team aims to produce full-bodied that display intense fruit.
